Who Can Apply for Medicare?

Most people are eligible for Medicare when they:

  • Turn 65 years old

  • Are under 65 and have a qualifying disability

  • Have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

Already receiving Social Security? You may be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and B.

When Should You Apply for Medicare?

1. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your first chance to sign up:

  • Begins 3 months before your 65th birthday

  • Includes your birthday month

  • Ends 3 months after your birthday month


2. General Enrollment Period (GEP)

  • January 1 – March 31 each year

  • Coverage begins July 1


3. Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

You may qualify if:

  • You had employer coverage

  • You lost creditable coverage

  • You moved to a new plan service area
