Not everyone who is on Medicare needs to go to the hospital. But what everyone does eventually need are lab tests, screenings, and doctor visits. That's where Part B comes in!

Let's take a look below!

What Does Medicare Part B Cover?

A Simple Guide to Outpatient Care

If Medicare Part A is your hospital insurance, then think of Medicare Part B as your day-to-day medical insurance. It helps cover the cost of outpatient services, preventive care, and medically necessary treatments. Let’s break down exactly what it covers—and what it doesn’t—so you can make informed healthcare choices.

Overview of Medicare Part B: Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment; does not cover long-term care, most dental care, eye exams for glasses, or dentures.

What Medicare Part B Covers

Part B is focused on medical services and preventive care:

Doctor Visits and Outpatient Care

  • Primary care and specialist visits

  • Outpatient surgery

  • Urgent care services

  • Mental health outpatient services

Preventive Services

  • Flu shots

  • Cancer screenings (mammograms, colonoscopies, etc.)

  • Cardiovascular screenings

  • Annual Wellness Visit

Diagnostic Tests

  • Lab work

  • X-rays

  • MRIs and CT scans (if medically necessary)

Durable Medical Equipment (DME)

  • Walkers, wheelchairs, oxygen equipment, CPAP machines

Certain Medications

  • Drugs administered in a clinical setting (like chemotherapy, infusions, or injections)

What Part B Does Not Cover

  • Prescription drugs you pick up at the pharmacy (unless you have Part D)

  • Dental, vision, and hearing care

  • Cosmetic procedures

  • Long-term care or custodial services

  • Most over-the-counter products

How Much Does Part B Cost?

Unlike Part A, Part B has a monthly premium. In 2024, the standard premium is $174.70, but it may be higher based on your income.

You’ll also pay:

  • Annual deductible: $240 (in 2024)

  • Coinsurance: Typically 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for services

Final Thoughts

Medicare Part B is essential for covering the medical services you use most often. When paired with Part A or a Medicare Advantage plan, it forms the foundation of your health coverage.
